1999 a Year for Intense Elaboration of New Laws in Latvia

Legislation is something that goes along with and helps to arrange practice. It's an axiom, so there's no reason why we should look for unnecessary laws in the field of informatics before information technologies are developed. Visvaldis Briedis, who is the director of the Informatics Strategy Division of the Latvian Transport Ministry, and who simultaneously heads the ministry's legislation development group, says that since 1997, when the ministry established a new Informatics Department, work has developed very quickly in the area of legislation. The last two years have been very fruitful. In 1998 a new Freedom of Information law was passed, while a series of other laws were drafted. These should be adopted in 1999.
